Binley Park Sixth Form.
The Sixth form
comprised two years, Lower and Upper. Lower sixth often comprised pupils who
were starting 'A' level courses and those re-sitting 'O' levels, and was thus
larger in numbers than Upper Sixth. There was a separate common room adjoining
the Staff room, between the Hall and the Swimming pool, as well as a Sixth form
tutor room in each house block.
Within the block was a large common room, a kitchen, where Sixth formers served
hold and cold drinks and sweets/crisps etc, to Sixth form and teachers alike,
there was also a room used by head of sixth form as a study and Careers advice
room.
Sixth Form Head's I know of were Leslie Turner and the late Helena Ranson (Nee
Goult).
There was a record player, usually dominated by Upper Sixth, and a Darts board.
We were allowed to adorn the walls in our own decoration, and I was asked, as an A level art student to contribute, along with others in later years, including Jon Harris and Andy Millar.
As this page expands, I hope to include pictures of the common room interior, part of which I painted with an impression of Charlie Chaplin, further Artwork was added the following year by Andy Millar and Jon Harris.
To start off with, here is a Sixth Form Photograph from 1974, sent by Paul Bradbury - Head Boy in 1975/76. Please select the Thumbnail to open the Full size picture in a new browser window. When finished, select the [Close Window] Icon at the bottom of the opened window.
The Sixth Form pupils were elected as Prefects, duties ranging from 'Fag' patrol on the field (by the brook) to Bus stop duty - keeping the unruly mob clear of the innocent public, making sure the buses loaded in a timely manner. Sixth formers wore a different tie to set them apart, and a Prefect Metal Pin badge.
